From time to time I have featured in these pages what I would term “Notes from Limassol”, contributed by an old friend, whose pen name is Charalambous.  He has just written to me: “I enjoyed your book which I loaded on my kindle. It is quite an amazing saga, in parts very evocative to me (although my memories of those times are less exact than yours and limited by my comparative youth at the time). The detail is most impressive… It’s an extraordinary story and a different angle from all the other reminiscences of the war years that I’ve come across…”

Charalamobous, a.k.a. Charles Dodd, contributed this review to Amazon on 4 January 2016

This is much more than just another story of the second world war. Patrick Skinner’s recollections of growing up in the 1930s and through the 1940s make fascinating reading. "One Kid’s War" is a record of home life with the war going on mostly in the background – but sometimes coming very close and personal. Drawing on vivid memories and on his extensive diaries, Patrick Skinner writes about a constantly upheaving family, forever moving from one part of the country to another, about childhood (and parental) escapades, with so many different schools and friends along the way, taking the reader into his thoughts and plans in those early years. The writing is fluent and racy, with an impressive attention to detail and is illustrated with photographs throughout. Anyone who lived about the same time will experience many evocative moments in the narrative; all readers should find much to appreciate in this honest and intriguing account.
