“Put in a pound of Lard”

As I dry fried some bacon on Friday lunch time I got to thinking about a day long ago when I organised demonstrations of non-stick frying pan in department stores around the UK.  In Manchester one day, the lady demonstrator I had hired didn’t turn up and I was faced with fifty or more ladies wanting to see the magic pans in operation. So I got out the eggs, the bacon and the sliced bread and demonstrated cooking a fry up using no oil or fat, just what came out of the bacon.

Later, a woman came up to me and said fried bacon and egg gave her husband a stomach ache.  I asked her what she did.  “Well, I heat up the frying pan on the stove and then put a pound of lard into it”.  Incredulously I asked, what then?  “I put in the bacon, the egg and the bread”, she answered.

She tasted my non-stick cooking and said it was better than hers.  She bought a pan, and, believe it or not, wrote to the manufacturers a week or so later to say she was now frying without lard and that her husband had had no more stomach upsets.  Dr. Skinner had struck again.
